I’ve been a bit MIA on the blog due to school, work, and life in general, but I’m back with a quick photolog to preview what you can expect at the newest noodle stop in town: Chef Hung Taiwanese Beef Noodle.
Disclaimer: I was invited to preview Chef Hung Taiwanese Beef Noodle during their soft opening. My meal was compensated but all thoughts and opinions are unbiased and my own!

What to expect:
- fairly priced noodle soups (~$10+, comparable to pho prices in my opinion)
- clean, modern, and open interior
- large portions, good for sharing
- friendly service

A bit about Chef Hung Taiwanese Beef Noodle: Serving authentic Taiwanese cuisine, Chef Hung is an international restaurant chain with locations in Taiwan, China, the US, and also closer to home – Vancouver! If you’re not a noodle fan, there are other dishes available on the menu too. However, keep in mind that Chef Hung is an award-winning chef known for his Taiwanese beef noodle dishes.
The Edmonton location is the first in Alberta. Located right off Whyte Ave, it’s a pretty central spot and there’s even free parking – thank goodness.
I was told that Chef Hung would never serve a dish that he would not eat himself and apparently, he is a picky eater! So, one can only assume that the dishes they serve are top notch with high-quality ingredients, right?

I haven’t really tried authentic Taiwanese food before so I didn’t have much to compare my meal with. However, I personally found it comparable to Chinese/Hong Kong cuisine. Overall, the food impressed me and I definitely see myself coming back to try more.
For the media preview, we ordered from a set menu. The actual menu is available for those who came in during regular hours.

We tried the Champion Beef Shank Noodle Soup which came in a set with Cold Mixed Baby Cucumbers and a Wintermelon drink. To keep this short and simple, it was delicious. Think of those herbal Asian soups but better (at least I thought so).
The broth was rich and earthy. Filled with aromas of Chinese herbs, the broth is what makes this dish extra tasty. There is also no MSG or preservatives added, so it didn’t feel like a heavy meal at all. The noodles were cooked well and the beef was tender. I loved the beef shank, in particular!
Side note – the noodles are handmade in Vancouver and shipped to Edmonton.
The Wintermelon drink was actually one of my highlights for this meal. It was so refreshing! I might be biased though because I also just really love wintermelon beverages (e.g. Gong Cha’s wintermelon milk cap anyone?!).

The other set we tried consisted of Noodles topped with ground pork sauce, Hot and Sour Soup, and an Apple Cider drink.
The apple cider drink was pretty much like a sparkling apple juice. A bit too carbonated and sweet for me so I didn’t drink much of it.

The noodles with ground pork sauce was pretty good but didn’t quite win me over like the soup did. Notably, Chef Hung does not cheap out on the dish, there’s plenty of sauce and meat! However, I found the noodles to clump together and the sauce itself was a bit too nutty. I did like that there were fresh veggies to help to balance the dish.
A helpful tip: you must try Chef Hung’s chili oil! It worked well with this dish, especially!

The hot and sour soup was… well, sour. I’m not sure how else to describe it. Very strong flavours but not quite up my alley. I know some people who would be all over this though!
Overall, I have to admit that I loved one set more than the other. I would continue ordering the noodle soup, for sure – after all, that’s what Chef Hung is known for. There were deep fried chicken nuggets and rice on the menu though, which also oddly caught my attention.
I’ll eventually make my way back to try more menu items and form a solid opinion, but in the meantime check them out for yourself! Chef Hung Taiwanese Noodle Soup’s grand opening is Sunday, October 21st. Their current soft opening hours are 11am-3pm / 5pm-8pm. Thanks for having me!
