Best Sushi in Edmonton: 5 Must-Visit Spots

What better way to revive this food blog than with one of my all-time favourite foods: sushi. If you are looking for the best sushi in Edmonton, here are 5 spots I’ve personally tried, returned to, and would confidently recommend. Each one stands out for a different reason, whether you are after something cozy and traditional, modern and trendy, or an elevated chef-driven experience. Whatever it is, these spots will not disappoint!

Note – no all-you-can-eat (AYCE) spots on here because I am not a big AYCE fan. I prefer quality over quantity!

Sushi Wasabi – Traditional, Authentic & Cozy

5714 111 St, Edmonton – $$
If you’re on the hunt for a traditional and authentic experience, I’d recommend Sushi Wasabi. Located in Lendrum Place by Southgate, they’ve been quietly serving this area for years. Without any social media presence, it’s a charming neighborhood gem that is one of those “if you know, you know” spots. From the outside looking in, this spot is not anything fancy, but don’t let that fool you – this is a must visit if you care about quality fish, traditional technique and good sushi.

My recommendations:

  • Nigiri Sushi with:
    • Aburi Salmon
    • Hotate
    • Tamago
  • Negitoro Ura Maki
  • Beef Tataki

Izakaya Tomo – Lively, Laidback & Reliable

3739 99 St NW, Edmonton – $$
For the times when you want to share plates and catch up with friends in a laidback atmosphere, Izakaya Tomo should be your pick. Izakaya Tomo has been around for quite some time too and it’s been on my dining rotation for so long. It’s one of my go-to picks for celebrations, late-night catch-ups, or when I want sushi at a reliable spot. On weekends, the atmosphere is buzzing, making it a fun evening/night time destination. After visiting Japan, I can also confidently say that this is one of the only spots in Edmonton that brings me back to that traditional Izakaya feel. Grab a friend to enjoy a drink and share some delicious dishes!

My recommendations:

  • Melanie Roll
  • Nigiri – Aburi Toro Salmon, Tuna Belly
  • Chop-chop Roll
  • Don’t forget the Carbonara Udon

Japonais Bistro – Modern, Trendy and Always a Crowd Pleaser

2 locations – 6138 Currents Dr NW & 11806 Jasper Ave – $$$
A search for best sushi in Edmonton is not complete without Japonais Bistro on the list. With two locations in Edmonton now, this is one of the more popular stops for sushi and other Japanese fusion favourites. It’s consistently busy, and for good reason! It’s one of those restaurants where you truly can’t go wrong – the menu is broad, consistently solid, and crowd-friendly. Their plates are often beautifully presented and photo ready. Their downtown Edmonton location is more traditional-contemporary, while the Windermere location is modern and moody. Prices are on the higher end but it’s ideal for a date or group dinner. They sometimes have great deals on delivery apps or seasonal/weekly promos (like $1 sashimi on Tuesdays) if you are able to catch those.

My recommendations:

  • Pressed Salmon or Scallop Sushi
  • T&T Roll
  • A side of their Chicken Karaage

Kobachi – Intimate, Refined and Chef-Driven

 #125 200 Festival Lane – $$$
Kobachi is an intimate sushi restaurant located in Sherwood Park, so although not in Edmonton specifically, it is very much worth the short drive out. I first blogged about Kobachi in 2019 (!!) and I don’t get out there as often as I should, but every visit has been memorable. Their space is very small with only a handful of tables so a reservation is highly recommended. What sets apart Kobachi apart is their refined and sustainable menu. You won’t find flashy, sauce-heavy rolls here – just clean, well executed sushi. Portions are intentionally modest, which just means you will want to order more.

My recommendations:

  • Scallop
  • Aburi Salmon
  • King Salmon
  • Sablefish
  • Finish with the Fuji Apple Brulee for dessert!

MSSM – Luxury, Curated and Omakase-Focused

#118 10111 104 Ave NW – $$$$
For a more elevated experience, consider omakase. MSSM actually originated from Toronto and their menu is curated by Two-Star Michelin Chef Masaki Saito. Their Edmonton location is in the heart of the Ice District and provides a more luxury and elevated option for sushi. If you have not tried Omakase before, this is a dining experience where the menu is left to the chef. Traditionally, diners enjoy a customized and chef-driven menu – unaware of what comes next. However, at MSSM, you can view the full set menu before dining.

That said, the omakase menu here is well-curated with high quality and delicious ingredients. It’s a splurge at $98 for dinner, but you’re paying for premium ingredients and the full experience of watching the sushi chefs make the sushi right in front of you. During my visits, the staff here have always been very quick, attentive and interactive with patrons. With limited omakase options in the city, this is one of the best ways to experience a curated sushi menu in Edmonton.

My recommendation: check out their lunch omakase from 11:30-2 at $62.50 to enjoy a condensed omakase menu at a reduced price. Treat yourself to the Uni Kiss, comes at an extra cost to the omakase menu.

Sushi Aroma – Casual, Affordable and Quick

6234 99 St NW – $
I’ll throw in a bonus sushi option because most good sushi spots are not a cheap meal, by any means. You gotta pay the price for tasty food! However, if you are on a budget or just want a quick and casual sushi meal, consider Sushi Aroma. This is another local establishment that is worth a visit – it’s affordable, fast, and safe when you just need a sushi fix without the splurge.

My recommendation:

  • Chop Chop roll
  • Salmon roll
